Scraping the Sky
... from different perspectives! After all these years in New York, I still find myself standing at intersections with my neck stretched like a giraffe - gaping up at the glittering skyscrapers towering over me. My American Dream is also up there in the clouds: With every flying hour safely under my belt, I’m one step closer to another pilot’s rating. My favorite experience is flying high above the Hudson River right along the New York skyline. Amazingly enough, you can still do it, even with the city under the constant fear of a terrorist attack ... New York
… was simply a question of listening to my guts: I wanted to pursue my dream career in my dream city. In 1999, I gave up my job with DW-TV in Brussels and started out here as a freelance journalist. While still laboring under sensory overload in this multicultural Mecca, I was indirectly called back to my first professional experience as a stockbroker, as DeutschlandRadio hired me as their Wall Street correspondent. Since 2004, I've also been reporting on the fast-paced financial markets for 3-SAT and ZDF-TV. To mix things up, I like to research political, social and cultural background stories, in both America and around the world ... Once Between the Worlds
… always caught by travel fever. My most memorable reporting experiences are based on people I’ve met while literally in the middle of nowhere. If you’re ever driving between Salt Lake City and Reno, make a point to turn off the highway when you see a weathered wooden sign with the words “Thelma and Louise Bar.” Just don’t be disappointed when, after an hour bouncing over a bumpy gravel road, you end up in front of a windswept little shack with a rusted bathtub in the front yard. Old Johnny is glad to greet each and every visitor! And the Schnapps he makes, is as unique as his American Dream: Johnny runs an apple orchard in the middle of the desert ...
